If you want the luxury and comfort of a five-star Montreal hotel but at an affordable price, you may want to stay in a bed and breakfast.  There are many B&Bs all throughout the main city but some of the nicest are near Plateau.  This area is very calm and residential with many cafes, restaurants and small shops.  Keep in mind that many bed and breakfasts cost as much or more than a five star hotel.  However, these offer a personal atmosphere and many with all services available to you.  Plus, your host will also be your personal source of information.

In addition to these Montreal hotel options, you will find a lot of specialty lodging.  For the most budget travelers, you will find dorm-style hostels for around $20 a night.  For longer term stays, you can rent out rooms in traveler apartments.  It is good to check the reviews of these apartments beforehand though because some are very run down.  You are better off looking for deals on Montreal hotels.  There are many vacation rentals in beautiful lofts and even entire homes.
