Night Life in Montreal

Night Life in MontrealMontreal nightlife is raging with energy and excitement as fun-seeking people hit up the hottest clubs, trendy bars and hot underground joints.  The city has the soul of Europe with a wild sleeplessness like New York.    There are two major areas of Montreal for going out: Rue Crescent with its laid back pubs and Rue St. Laurent which caters to the upscale class.  While bars might shut down at 3am, there are plenty of all-night clubs that you can hit up afterwards.  Keep in mind that smoking isn’t banned in bars and just about everyone loves to light up.

Over in Crescent Street, you will find a more laid-back atmosphere of pubs and patios.  All the major locals for strolling and drinking are in the one block stretch between Rue de Maisonneuvee and Rue St. Catherines.  Especially in peak season, you will find a lot of tourists in this area.  Outside, you can sit and enjoy a street-side view and indulge in the popular activity of people watching and slow drinking.  The more social scene is inside bar.  The prices are about $6 for a local Canadian beer and there are plenty of happy hours to enjoy if you arrive earlier.  Just keep in mind that this is the tourist area so some trendy places have inflated prices.  The benefit, however, is that these places are English speaking and have great service.

Over on St. Laurent, you will find a more vibrant nightlife.  The bars and restaurants are located on a nearly mile-long stretch where people get dressed up to stroll the strip.  From the intersection at Rue Prince-Arthur, you will find just about every local within just two blocks.  At this corner, you will find the only pedestrian-only street in Montreal which is packed with cafes.  Even though St. Laurent is more upscale, you will still find reasonable prices.  Places like Vol de Nuit are popular with the college crowd because of their special of two for one drinks.

At night, many of the cafes turn into small night clubs which cater to various different groups.  Some clubs, like Sophia which is located across from Vol de Nuit, you shouldn’t even bother trying to get into unless you are on a VIP list or a celebrity.  There are some very wild clubs which mostly cater towards upscale groups of people. However, you will find spots like Publix and The Lodge Tavern which are dress-down and create a laid back party atmosphere.
